The University of Tampere revealed the remarkable properties of lingonberries using rodents as a model. One group of mice was kept on a high-calorie diet (the feed contained a lot of fats and carbohydrates), which triggered metabolic disturbances and weight gain. At the same time, inflammation developed in the animals' bodies, and their blood sugar and cholesterol levels rose.
The second group ate the same diet but also received lingonberry powder. This is precisely what helped keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels normal, curb inflammation, and slow weight gain. The researchers' report states: "Lingonberries may have a stronger effect on metabolism and inflammatory processes in the body than previously assumed."
At the same time, it is not yet known exactly which compound in lingonberries produces the beneficial effect. Lingonberries contain such active anti-inflammatory compounds as resveratrol, quercetin, kaempferol, and proanthocyanidins.
