The Tree That Protects Against Heart Disease

The trunks of Siberian and Far Eastern larch contain volatile compounds that may stimulate the body to fight cardiovascular disease more actively.

Researchers observed the processes occurring in the vascular cells of rats that had survived radiation exposure. According to the specialists, in such circumstances the body begins to produce large amounts of ACE molecules, and this proliferation stimulates the growth of oxidants — substances that damage vessel walls and the DNA of their cells.

However, the flavonoid dihydroquercetin, with a pronounced antioxidant effect, was found in larch wood. This component, as it turned out, is able to block the activity of ACE molecules and also suppress the effect of oxidants destructive to blood vessels.

Flavonoids are compounds found in various plants. According to research, many of them can exhibit antioxidant, antiallergenic, and even anticancer properties. The authors of the project claim that, when flavonoids from several plant sources were tested, larch flavonoids proved to be the most powerful healing substances for vascular tissues.

As "Remedium" reports, two weeks of therapy with the experimental drug teplizumab made it possible to delay the development of type 1 diabetes in high-risk patients — people whose relatives already have diabetes.
The drug was tested on 76 volunteers aged 8 to 49 who had antibodies associated with diabetes. In the teplizumab group, type 1 diabetes developed one year later than in the placebo group. Only 7% of patients in the main group were diagnosed with diabetes in the first year after the end of therapy. For the placebo group, the figure was 44%.
The most common side effects of teplizumab are low lymphocyte counts and fever. The drug is known to reduce the activity of autoreactive CD3+ T cells, saving the insulin-secreting beta cells of the pancreas from destruction.
