The Mediterranean Diet — A Key to Relieving Psoriasis

French scientists report that psoriasis symptoms can be eased with proper nutrition — specifically, the Mediterranean diet.

Psoriasis is one of the most common and severe skin conditions, manifesting as inflammation. Recently, French scientists announced that the disease can be overcome with proper nutrition. They recommend following the Mediterranean diet, reports "Mail.RU News".
Experts surveyed 35,000 people, 3,557 of whom had psoriasis (878 had severe cases). Respondents described their diet and how closely it resembled the Mediterranean diet. This eating pattern provides the body with healthy monounsaturated fats (olive oil), antioxidants (fruits, vegetables), and fiber (vegetables and grains), while reducing the consumption of meat, dairy products, and alcohol.
The results showed that people whose diet was closest to the Mediterranean pattern had fewer skin inflammations. The scientists concluded that the diet helps suppress inflammatory processes and reduce disease manifestations. Scientists demonstrated this using rats, reports Xinhua. When an animal absorbed information about a new place, brain cells emitted longer signals. When signals were made even longer, the animals remembered better.
This concerns modifying signaling activity in the hippocampus — the brain's memory center. Influencing it enhanced learning ability. During the experiments, scientists recorded the signaling activity of hippocampal cells while rats performed a memory task. They found that sharp activity waves (reflected on EEG) were longer by tens of milliseconds when a rat was placed in a new location instead of a familiar one.
Next, scientists engineered hippocampal cells to add working neurons to the natural sequence of sharp waves. As a result, the sharp waves were amplified, and the animals' memory quality improved by 10-15%. This allowed them to more effectively find treats in a maze.
