Holter heart monitoring: what is it, when is it prescribed and how is the procedure performed?

Holter heart monitoring: what it is, when it is prescribed and how the procedure is performed. A method of continuous ECG recording for 24 hours or more — detects hidden arrhythmias and ischemia.

What is Holter monitoring?

Holter monitoring (or 24-hour ECG monitoring) is a method of continuously recording an electrocardiogram (ECG) over 24 hours or more. This diagnostic technique detects hidden arrhythmias, ischemic episodes and other cardiac conditions that cannot be captured during a standard ECG.

When is Holter monitoring prescribed?

A cardiologist may order this examination in the presence of the following symptoms and conditions:

  • Palpitations, irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting
  • Chest pain, related or unrelated to physical activity
  • Suspected coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of arrhythmia and hypertension treatment
  • Pacemaker function assessment

How is the procedure performed?

Preparation for the examination

  • No special preparation is required, but it is recommended to shower beforehand, as bathing is not allowed during monitoring.
  • Men with significant chest hair may need to shave the areas where the electrodes will be attached.

Device setup

  • Disposable electrodes are placed on the patient's chest, connected to a compact recorder (Holter monitor) that is attached to a belt or hung around the neck.
  • The device records the ECG for 24 to 72 hours, depending on the physician's prescription.

Daily activity during monitoring

  • The patient maintains a normal lifestyle, recording in a special diary the times of meals, sleep, physical activity and any possible complaints.
  • Water and strong magnetic fields should be avoided, as they may affect recording quality.

Device removal and data analysis

  • After monitoring is complete, the physician analyzes the collected data, identifying abnormalities and possible pathologies.

Contraindications for Holter monitoring

The procedure is safe and has no absolute contraindications. However, it may be temporarily postponed in the presence of severe skin conditions at the electrode attachment sites (dermatitis, burns, etc.).
