Non-Surgical Nose Reshaping — A New Reality for Plastic Surgery Adepts

Dr. Michael Hill (Los Angeles): non-surgical rhinoplasty uses microneedles, electric current and a 3D mold to reshape the nose in 5 minutes.

If a person wants to change the shape of their nose, it is not at all necessary to go under a surgeon's scalpel. Dr. Michael Hill from Occidental College in Los Angeles proposes a non-surgical approach. He uses microscopic needles, electric current and 3D-printed molds to reshape living tissues.

This is an inexpensive, minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia. Reshaping the nose takes about five minutes. Cartilage consists of rigid fibers interwoven with one another in a single structure, like spaghetti. Scientists discovered that tissue with a higher density of electrically charged molecules is stiffer than tissue with a lower charge density.

Moreover, when an electric current is passed through the cartilage, the tissue becomes more pliable. And at that very moment one can reshape the nose (the new form is set by a three-dimensional model). The technology was tested on a rabbit whose ears normally stand upright. Using the mold and electrodes with microneedles, the researchers were able to bend one ear without damage. As soon as the current was switched off, the cartilage began to harden according to the new shape. Only then was it possible to remove the mold.
