An unexpected solution will help defeat the most dangerous infections

University of Michigan: non-thermal plasma generates ozone that kills 99.9% of viruses in a quarter of a second and 95% of bacteria in 10 seconds.

A new system can destroy bacteria and viruses present in the air in record time. The system uses what is known as non-thermal plasma — a substance that leads to the formation of free radicals. These molecules react with ordinary oxygen, producing ozone.

Ozone is known to have antibacterial properties and destroys pathogens by disrupting the cell walls of bacteria. It is known to kill up to 95% of E. coli bacteria in just 10 seconds. And it has recently been found that ozone also kills 99.9% of viruses in just a quarter of a second. According to researchers, ozone treatment will make it possible to stop the spread of dangerous infections.

University of Michigan staff are now trying to create a kind of antibacterial mask that any person could wear. This is a more effective approach compared with antibacterial filters in ventilation and air-conditioning systems.
