Doctors Explain What Happens When a Blood Clot Forms in the Body

Professor Simon Matskeplishvili of Moscow State University: a detached clot in the pulmonary artery kills within seconds, while one in the left atrium causes a severe stroke.

Professor Simon Matskeplishvili, deputy director for research at the University Clinic of Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov, states: it happens that a large clot breaks off in a person. Carried by the bloodstream, it begins to migrate and eventually causes vessel blockage.

For example, if the blockage occurs in the pulmonary artery, the person will die within seconds. The presence of a clot in the left atrium during atrial fibrillation can lead to a severe stroke, since from the vessels of the heart it travels directly to the vessels of the brain.

According to statistics, clots more often form rather than break off. According to the expert, they grow and at some point cause an extensive myocardial infarction, which frequently leads to death. Clot formation is promoted by prolonged sedentary behavior, alcohol abuse, smoking and chronic diseases.
