Experts Explain Why Too Much Iron in the Body Is Harmful

Analysis of 900 diseases: high iron levels protect against anemia but raise the risk of diabetes, liver disease, and skin infections.

The University of South Australia and Imperial College London warn that an iron surplus increases the risk of diabetes and liver disease. Studies showed that excess iron protected against anemia and high cholesterol but was often linked to liver diseases, diabetes, and bacterial skin infections.

In particular, people with high iron levels more often experienced cellulitis. This is not the "orange peel" effect. It is an acute inflammation of the subcutaneous fatty tissue caused by bacteria entering through external damage. Cellulitis is treated promptly by surgically removing affected tissue.

Experts analyzed the effect of iron concentration on the risk of developing 900 diseases and conditions. According to scientists, they were especially interested in the connection between "high iron levels — low cholesterol levels." This is an important finding for preventing atherosclerosis. As for other illnesses, specialists plan to test in clinical trials whether their risk can be reduced by adjusting iron levels.
