Mediterranean diet — effective protection against erectile dysfunction

A 10-year analysis of 25,000 men: the Mediterranean diet and fruit-derived flavonoids reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction by 14%.

The condition of men with erectile dysfunction can be improved by enriching their diet with flavonoids from fruits and vegetables. These compounds reduce inflammation and strengthen immune defenses. This conclusion was drawn from a ten-year analysis of 25,000 men with erectile dysfunction.

According to scientists, high consumption of fruit (the main source of anthocyanins and flavanones) produced a 14% reduction in the risk of erectile dysfunction. Flavanones can also be found in tea, vegetables, legumes, and red wine. In general, a healthy diet — exemplified by the Mediterranean diet — can protect against many illnesses. Among them is type 2 diabetes, which raises the risk of erectile dysfunction.

The analysis showed that men without dysfunction more often consumed plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and fish, with little processed meat and few processed grain products. Even men who had diabetes but tried to eat properly had a reduced risk of erectile dysfunction.

The Mediterranean diet also had a positive effect on women's sexual health. This was shown by another study involving about 600 women aged 35 to 70 with type 2 diabetes. Sexual activity was observed more often in women who followed the diet.
