Implant Stimulator Relieves Depression in the Most Severe Patients

Washington University: vagus nerve stimulator reduces severe depression symptoms by 34%, with effect lasting up to 5 years.

If antidepressants don't help a person, it may be worth turning to new-generation implantable devices. Washington University School of Medicine recently tested such a device - a vagus nerve stimulator. According to scientists, the device improved patients' condition even in the most severe cases, writes NBC News.
Moreover, the positive effect was maintained for five years. People's general condition improved, libido increased, they communicated more with those around them. It is known that about 600 people were involved in the trials. They all received standard antidepressants, but half were implanted with a stimulator. It was attached to the vagus nerve.
As a result, in people with the implant, a 34% reduction in depression symptom manifestation was recorded, which translated into significant improvement in quality of life. By the way, this same device is approved for treating epilepsy. Analysis of brain scan results indicates that vagus nerve stimulation leads to changes in the prefrontal cortex, cingulate cortex and insular lobe, as well as the brainstem.

Which toothpaste actually works?
Every advertisement promises a "snow-white smile," but not every paste truly cares about the health of your teeth. What should you pay attention to when choosing? And how do "therapeutic" pastes differ from regular ones?

Myth: The more foam - the better the cleaning
In fact, foaming agents are most often sodium lauryl sulfate. It does not affect plaque removal, but can cause gum irritation.

Reality: Composition matters, not taste and smell
Effective paste contains:

  • fluoride - strengthens enamel, prevents caries

  • calcium or hydroxyapatite - restores tooth structure

  • zinc, triclosan - reduce gum inflammation

  • safe abrasiveness level (RDA up to 100)

Do you need to whiten every day?
Pastes with whitening effect most often just polish teeth. This can lead to enamel thinning. Such pastes are not recommended for daily use.

Is fluoride harmful?
Fluoride in moderate amounts is safe and beneficial. It causes harm only with excessive consumption - for example, in regions with excess fluoride in water or when children swallow large doses of paste.
