People with insomnia have an increased risk of coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. An analysis of data from 1.3 million people was conducted. It turned out that individuals with a genetic predisposition to insomnia suffered from heart diseases more often than others, according to scientists from the Karolinska Institute.
They analyzed 248 genetic markers (SNPs) from the perspective of their role and the connection between insomnia and cardiovascular complications (heart failure, ischemic stroke, and atrial fibrillation). It was established that people with a genetic risk of insomnia have a 13% higher risk of heart attacks, a 16% higher risk of heart failure, and a 7% higher risk of strokes.
It is known that insomnia causes increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. This stimulates the stress response. This response mainly affects the cardiovascular system, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and enhancing muscle contraction, which in turn increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. Other studies link poor sleep to high body mass index and type 2 diabetes.
