Effective way to suppress tobacco cravings discovered

American Psychological Association: inhaling pleasant scents (chocolate, vanilla, lemon) reduces cigarette cravings in 232 smokers.

Experts from the American Psychological Association have devised a way to make quitting cigarettes easier. It turns out that inhaling pleasant scents can curb the desire to smoke. This approach was tested during an experiment involving 232 smokers aged 18 to 55.

At the time of the study, volunteers were not trying to quit smoking and were not using any substitutes such as nicotine gum or electronic cigarettes. Volunteers were asked to abstain from cigarettes 8 hours before the experiment began. However, they were allowed to bring a lighter and cigarettes with them.

In the research laboratory, smokers were given pleasant aromas to inhale (chocolate, apple, mint, lemon, vanilla) and one unpleasant chemical scent, as well as the familiar smell of tobacco. Then each lit their own cigarette, held it in their hands, but did not smoke. They were required to rate their desire to smoke on a scale from 1 to 100. It turned out that after inhaling pleasant aromas, the desire to smoke weakened.
