University of Illinois showed how important it is to drink plain water

University of Illinois: a study with 75 children showed that good hydration improves cognitive flexibility and reaction speed in multitasking tests.

Drinking water not only helps maintain optimal fluid levels in the body but also enhances a child's multitasking ability. A study was conducted involving 75 children. Scientists compared body hydration based on urine and cognitive performance in children at the very start of the study, after children drank 500 milliliters of water per day for 4 days, and after 2.5 liters of water per day for another 4 days.

Children with higher baseline hydration levels coped better with switching between tasks (an indicator of cognitive flexibility). In addition, children overall had higher performance and reacted faster to the task-switching test after consuming more water, although there were no differences in attentiveness and the ability to inhibit reactions.

After consuming more water for several days, children's hydration improved, as expected. Nevertheless, many of the children had the same or only slightly different values in urinary hydration markers. Apparently, they may experience water deficiency against the background of their daily activities.
