Johnson & Johnson Vision has begun selling unique contact lenses in the United States. They darken in bright sunlight, protecting the eyes the same way photochromic eyeglasses do. These are soft contact lenses for daily wear that contain an additional component.
It reacts differently depending on the level of UV radiation. Within 90 seconds the lenses can fully adapt to changes in brightness, activating darkening mode in bright sunlight. However, the developers note one caveat: such lenses cannot fully replace sunglasses.
Health officials reportedly gave their approval for the use of the lenses back in April of the previous year. At that time, results were presented from experiments involving 24 participants. Experts evaluated how the lenses affect the ability to drive a car and distinguish objects during day and night. It was proven that the lenses do not interfere with normal vision in any way.
