Sonoelastography of the kidneys (shear-wave, SWE)

Shear-wave elastography measures the stiffness of renal parenchyma in kPa/m/s. We assess the degree of fibrosis in chronic nephropathies and track changes over time.

Kidney sonoelastography at Horev Medical

Shear-wave elastography measures the propagation speed of transverse waves in tissue and yields absolute stiffness values in kPa/m/s. This helps to judge the degree of parenchymal fibrosis in chronic nephropathies and track changes during therapy.

When and what

Indications and what we assess

On the left — reasons for prescription. On the right — what the examination reveals.

Indications

When it is prescribed

  • Chronic kidney diseases, a history of pyelonephritis / glomerulonephritis
  • Arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus
  • Monitoring after operations and transplantation (as prescribed by a nephrologist)
What we assess

Examination results

  • Average stiffness values of the cortical layer (kPa/m/s)
  • Asymmetry between the right / left kidney
  • Concomitant findings of standard ultrasound: dimensions, echogenicity, cysts / stones
How it is performed

Preparation and limitations

24 hours before — a gentle diet, exclude gas-forming foods; come on an empty stomach for 6–8 hours (water is allowed). The duration is 15–20 minutes, the method is painless.

Stiffness depends on hydration and pressure; interpretation is performed taking into account the clinical picture and laboratory data. The final diagnosis is always made by the treating physician.
