Coffee Turns Out to Be a Universal Fat-Burning Drink

University of Nottingham: coffee stimulates brown fat, which burns white fat deposits and improves blood sugar control.

Coffee is able to stimulate brown fat — a type of fat tissue that burns white fat deposits (which store energy) to produce thermal energy. People with a lower body mass index have more brown fat present.

Brown fat often begins to burn sugars and fats in response to low temperatures, according to researchers at the University of Nottingham. Increasing brown fat activity improves blood sugar control, lipid profile, promotes calorie burning, and supports weight loss.

Until recently, scientists did not know how to stimulate brown fat. They attempted to do so using coffee. Specialists used an advanced thermal imaging camera to identify where brown fat is located in the volunteers' bodies. According to previous studies, brown fat is primarily located in the neck area.

During the experiment, scientists observed that this zone became warmer after volunteers drank coffee. Now researchers must determine which specific components of coffee produced this effect — whether caffeine is responsible or something else. Testing of caffeine-based dietary supplements is also expected.
