Experts Explain How a Workspace Should Look

Central Michigan University: natural elements in the workplace — sunlight, plants, music — reduce stress and boost productivity.

People spend 40 hours or more at work. That is why, psychologists advise, the workspace should be organized so that a person feels as comfortable as possible. The workspace can not only increase work productivity, but also influence the state of one's health.

In particular, an unfavorable work environment causes back pain and problems with sleep and breathing. Staff at Central Michigan University determined that surrounding yourself with «natural elements» at work can improve your mood, increase job satisfaction, and even reduce stress levels.

First, the workplace should have access to sunlight. Without it, people become depressed, are less satisfied with their work, and less often demonstrate interest in company affairs. According to the experts, sitting by a window is not enough. During the lunch break, it is necessary to step outside under the sun's rays.

Second, flowers can be placed at the workplace. If the office is dark, the choice should be made in favor of plants that do not require much light. In fact, even simple images of plants — nature photographs on the wall or as a screensaver on the work computer — will help.

An independent study by Cornell University showed that cheerful background music is an excellent motivator at work. It improves mood and prompts people to make decisions beneficial for the whole team, especially when they choose the music themselves.
