Measles causes "immune amnesia," infectious disease specialists warn

New research shows: measles causes "immune amnesia" — the body can forget how to fight other infections for up to three years.

It is well known that ignoring vaccinations threatens the development of dangerous diseases and disease outbreaks. New research clearly shows the danger of skipping the measles vaccine. Measles, it was found, leads to changes in how the immune system works.

It turns out that it forces the body to "forget" how to fight other diseases for up to three years. Scientists remind us: when the immune system encounters new bacteria or viruses, it "remembers" how to fight them, and the next time it quickly finds the right tool. This very mechanism is what makes vaccines effective — they introduce the body to a pathogen.

However, measles can force the immune system to forget the previously acquired defense skills. Scientists call this phenomenon immune amnesia (the loss of previously acquired experience is estimated at 11–73%). As a result, a person can easily contract infectious diseases they have already had before.
