Doctors Explain What Happens If You Sit in One Place for a Long Time

University of California: cutting sitting time by one hour per day lowers heart disease risk by 25%. Sitting 11+ hours raises the risk by 52%.

Women who do not neglect physical activity are largely protected from heart problems compared with those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. The University of California has found that reducing time spent sitting by just one hour per day can lower the risk of vascular diseases by more than 10%, and the risk of heart disease by more than 25%.

Scientists drew these conclusions by observing approximately 5,600 women aged 63 to 97 who had no history of stroke or heart attack. The analysis showed that each additional hour of daily physical activity reduced the risk of vascular and heart diseases by 12% and 26%, respectively.

Women who sat for 11 hours or more a day more often experienced problems such as diabetes or hypertension compared with those who sat the least each day. Moreover, if a woman sat without a break for a long time, her risk of heart disease jumped by 52% compared with women who took breaks and occasionally stood up.

It turns out that a positive effect can be obtained from any activity. Even 1 to 2 minutes of physical movement can help. A sedentary lifestyle reduces the volume of blood reaching the heart. The endothelium — the lining of blood vessels — also suffers.
