New Dressing Stops Bleeding as Quickly as Possible

Chinese scientists have developed a three-dimensional multilayer nanofiber sponge — a medical dressing for rapid hemostasis and tissue regeneration.

Chinese scientists from the Institute of Biophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing University of Science and Technology have figured out how to increase the effectiveness of medical dressings applied to open wounds. The new method makes it possible to significantly improve blood clotting and accelerate tissue regeneration.

Conventional dressings have structural and functional deficiencies. They do not stop bleeding effectively enough or restore the integrity of the skin. The scientists altered the traditional structure of dressings by creating a three-dimensional, multilayer sponge made from nanofiber. The layered nanofiber structure activates interaction between the sponge and blood cells, enabling bleeding control.

The new dressing can compress well while retaining elasticity, providing effective tamponade for deep wounds and creating a dynamic microenvironment to regulate cellular behavior. Experiments on mice with skin defects showed that the sponge markedly accelerates wound healing and reduces scar formation.
