Anti-inflammatory drugs are almost 80% more effective at treating depression than placebo. The point is that reducing the level of inflammation (which can be the body's reaction to stress and poor nutrition) helps to manage the symptoms of depression.
Experts at Huazhong University of Science and Technology analyzed 26 studies on the topic of depression involving more than 1,600 people. Volunteers mainly took omega-3, anti-inflammatory drugs such as non-steroidal medications, and antibiotics. According to the scientists, anti-inflammatory agents performed well. They can reasonably be prescribed for depression, especially in combination with antidepressants.
The effects of 6–12 week courses were considered. In the studies mentioned above, anti-inflammatory drugs were 79% more effective than placebo in treating depression. The most outstanding results were observed in patients taking omega-3, statins, antibiotics, and celecoxib (mainly prescribed as a pain reliever for arthritis patients).
