A new treatment option for nasal polyps

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Sinuva(mometasone furoate — mometasone furoate — a corticosteroid with strong anti-inflammatory action) — a sinus implant, a new option for treating recurrent nasal polyps in patients aged 18 and older who have previously undergone ethmoid sinus surgery.

After implantation, Sinuva expands within the sinus cavity and delivers the medication directly to the polyp site over 90 days. The study achieved its primary endpoints, which included a statistically significant 63% reduction in bilateral polyp grade, as well as decreased obstruction and congestion.

Secondary endpoints included the proportion of patients still indicated for surgery, improvement in sense of smell, nasal blockage sensation, and percentage of ethmoid sinus obstruction. These endpoints were met.

Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory action. Corticosteroids have been shown to exert a wide range of effects on multiple cell types and mediators involved in inflammation.
