Study: old drug shows new benefits

George Institute: canagliflozin reduces the risk of kidney failure by 33% and heart failure by 30% in diabetics — 4,000 patients across 34 countries.

The George Institute for Global Health (Sydney) reports on a kidney disease treatment that could change the lives of diabetics. Thanks to the new approach, the risk of kidney failure is reduced by 33%, the risk of heart failure by 30%, and overall cardiovascular abnormalities by 20%.

Specialists propose using canagliflozin — a medication classified as a glucose-lowering agent. As part of the latest study by Australian scientists, it was successfully tested on more than 4,000 people in 34 countries. It turned out that the drug not only protected diabetics from kidney failure, but also reduced their likelihood of developing heart failure and other cardiovascular complications.

In addition, canagliflozin helped people whose kidney function was already impaired. Experts remind us: people with diabetes and kidney disease have a significantly increased risk of kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and death in general.
