Recent research conducted by the University of Cape Town focused on cardiometabolic risk and the impact of sleep. An analysis of seven scientific papers devoted to extended sleep was carried out. It turned out that if people were sleep-deprived, a significant increase in sleep duration had a clearly positive effect on metabolic processes and heart condition.
In total, the studies included data from 138 adults (several groups): people who had no health problems; people who were healthy but slept little; individuals who were overweight and slept little; people who lacked sleep and also had hypertension. Their sleep pattern was changed over a period of 3 to 6 weeks. In total, sleep duration was increased by 21–177 minutes.
In addition to benefits for the heart, increased sleep duration led to reduced appetite, a weakened craving for sweet and salty foods, as well as the daily intake of calories from proteins.
