Viagra Could Help Pregnant Women with Preeclampsia

University of Mississippi: Viagra (sildenafil citrate) lowers blood pressure in pregnant women with preeclampsia when standard medications fail.

Preeclampsia is marked by dangerously high blood pressure in the mother, posing a threat to both her life and the baby's. And Viagra can lower that pressure. Researchers at the University of Mississippi, using rodent models, showed that sildenafil citrate — the active ingredient in Viagra — may protect the bodies of unborn children whose mothers have preeclampsia.

The drug curbed rising blood pressure in pregnant females exposed to stress (which served as the preeclampsia model). It worked in cases where conventional blood pressure medications had no effect. According to researchers, they also identified a potential target for targeted therapy.

It turned out to be a pathway linked to nitric oxide. Acting on it later improves how a child born to a preeclamptic mother responds to stress factors. As a result, blood circulation strengthens and pressure decreases. It is known that children whose mothers had preeclampsia have a higher risk of hypertension, kidney disease, and stroke.
