Why does the body need a fever? Why you shouldn't lower a fever "just in case"

Fever isn't an enemy — it's part of your immune defense. We explain when a fever is truly dangerous and when it is your ally.

Almost every one of us has a fever-reducing medicine at home. But not everyone knows: by lowering the temperature at the first signs of going slightly above normal, we sometimes prevent the body from recovering.

Fever is a symptom, not a disease

Fever is the immune system's response. When a virus or bacteria enters the body, it raises body temperature to create conditions in which the pathogens cannot multiply. It is like sterilising instruments — only inside the body.

The immune system works more actively at higher temperatures

At 38–39°C, more interferons are produced — substances that fight viruses. That is why lowering the temperature without good reason can delay recovery.

When fever should be lowered

  • If it exceeds 39°C in adults and 38.5°C in children
  • If there is a history of febrile seizures
  • If the person tolerates even a slight fever poorly (cardiovascular disease, etc.)
  • In pregnant women and children under 3 with an increased risk of complications

When to see a doctor

If the fever lasts more than 3 days and is accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, a rash, severe weakness or confusion — these are alarming symptoms. In such cases it is important to have a check-up or consult a therapist or paediatrician.

What if your temperature is 37.2°C and lasts for weeks?

This may be a sign of a low-grade infection, thyroid problems or stress. Do not wait — book an ultrasound, take laboratory tests and consult an endocrinologist.

Conclusion

Fever is a tool, not an enemy. If the body raises it, this means it is fighting. The main thing is not to interfere with it and to know when to step in.
