An Evening Bath Can Replace Sleep Medication

University of Texas: a 40–43°C bath 90 minutes before bed cuts time to fall asleep by 10 minutes. Bonus: a hot bath burns 126 calories an hour.

The University of Texas has found that you can reduce the time needed to fall asleep and improve sleep quality if you take a bath at 40–43 degrees Celsius 90 minutes before going to bed.

More than 5,000 studies on the effect of warm and hot baths on sleep were analyzed. This made it possible to calculate the optimal water temperature for improving sleep. It turned out that taking a bath an hour and a half before bedtime increased the speed of falling asleep by an average of 10 minutes.

Another study showed that a hot bath helps burn calories. In an hour you can burn an average of 126 calories this way. That is the same amount you can burn during a 25–30 minute walk. Dr. Steve Faulkner made this discovery while looking for ways to manage diabetes.
