Analysis showed why monitoring vitamin D levels matters

Trinity College Dublin: vitamin D deficiency in older adults doubles the risk of muscle weakness and triples the risk of impaired muscle function.

Vitamin D deficiency can adversely affect the muscular system in people aged 60 and older. Preserving muscle activity in later life ensures independence, a higher quality of life, and a reduced risk of falls.

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin conducted a study involving more than 4,000 elderly volunteers. The scientists found that muscle weakness occurred almost twice as often when vitamin D was deficient compared with normal levels (40.4% versus 21.6%).

Impaired muscle function was three times more common — 25.2% versus 7.9%. Vitamin D deficiency significantly increased the likelihood of reduced muscle strength and performance. According to the researchers, preventing vitamin D deficiency helps avoid problems with both muscles and bones.
