Genetics and sleep schedule are linked, scientists say

Russian Academy scientists: the ability to wake up easily is largely tied to genetics. Nutritionists add that spinach, chocolate, and an apple help you wake up.

Vladimir Dorokhov, head of the sleep and wakefulness laboratory at the Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, believes that a person's ability to work at night, like the ability to wake up easily, is largely linked to genetics. In some people this trait is more pronounced and is passed to later generations. As for waking up, there are "smart alarm clocks" on the market designed to make this easier.

"In my opinion, various devices that imitate the sunrise are effective only in winter. During the cold season the sun rises above the horizon later than people usually get up for work. 'Smart' alarm clocks help one get used to rising at that hour. In summer and spring, people wake up on their own together with the sunrise. Such devices may also be useful in gloomy weather, when the sky is fully covered with clouds," Dorokhov says.

Nutritionists, in turn, point out that spinach, chocolate, and an apple help you wake up. Spinach is rich in vitamin C, potassium, iron, and magnesium. This, along with its ability to regulate the nervous system, makes it especially beneficial. Eating chocolate triggers the production of endorphins, which improve mood. An apple is a valuable source of fructose, which provides energy.
